Older Driver Safety Awareness Week
What is Older Driver Safety Awareness Week?
The American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc. (AOTA) establishes Older Driver Safety Awareness Week every year in December to promote the importance of older driver safety and mobility that helps ensure older adults remain active within their communities.
Here in Florida, the Safe Mobility for Life Coalition endorses and supports AOTA's national efforts by raising awareness and promoting events throughout the state. During Older Driver Safety Awareness Week each day will focus on a different aspect of safety and mobility to benefit the aging population.
The Florida Department of Transportation’s Safe Mobility for Life Coalition hosts numerous events that help keep older drivers safe and mobile for life.
Throughout Older Driver Safety Awareness Week and the year, older adults can register for AARP and AAA Driver Safety Courses, as well as CarFit events, to remain safe drivers.
In addition to the events taking place during Older Driver Safety Awareness Week, the Safe Mobility for Life Coalition offers Florida drivers free You Hold the Keys to Your Transportation Future workshops throughout the year across the state. The Coalition offers this workshop to teach drivers the three keys to achieving safe mobility for life, which allows older adults to remain independent as well as connected to community. Older drivers, pedestrians, transit riders and even golf cart drivers can take advantage of free resources and materials available through FLsams.org that will help them stay safe and mobile for life.
